A snowstorm, Oberalp Pass

While there is a snowstorm in the mountains and the temperature falls below zero degree, they work two thousand meters below the surface, in twenty-five degree heat. They work in sweat and have to drink eight liters of water per day. Each day, they spend seven hours in dark and dust, and see no sun. They drill a big cavity in the Alps...

In 21 Nov 2008, I took part in a visit to two construction sites of the Gotthard Base Tunnel. Around 2018, the tunnel will become the longest railway tunnel in the world with the length of 57 km. The pictures were taken in two construction sites below Faido and Sedrun.
